The event “It begins with me. How the world can end hunger in our lifetime”, organised by Italy and Ireland to sustain the ini-tiatives of the World Food Programme, has taken place yesterday, Sunday 6th September at 7:00 pm, on the Expo Milano 2015 site in the Open Plaza of the Media Centre.

Bono, lead singer of U2 and co-founder of ONE, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, Italian and Irish Ministers of Agriculture Maurizio Martina and Simon Coveney, and the Director of the World Food Programme Ertharin Cousin have participated in the event.

Bono has arrived in Milan after the two dates in Italy with the Irish band U2’s Innocence + Experience 2015 tour. Bono has been dedicated to the fight against extreme poverty and hunger, especially in Africa, for many years. He co-founded the ONE Campaign which raises public awareness and works with political leaders to combat AIDS and preventable diseases, increase investments in agri-culture and nutrition, and demand greater transparency so governments are accountable to their citizens.

Social challenges in the spotlight at Expo Milano 2015

The announcement that the lead singer of U2 would be participating in the event was given by Ital-ian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi on his official Facebook page. The announcement followed a number of humanitarian initiatives that have taken place in these first four months of the Universal Exposition, ranging from World Humanitarian Day on August 19, which saw the participation of the world’s main humanitarian organizations, to the Women’s Weeks earlier in the summer. The Women’s Week events included the participation of the WFP’s Cousin, who on June 30, took part in the conference “Women’s Equality and Empowerment-The first step to Zero Hunger”.

The World Food Programme is one of three UN agencies that have been entrusted by the Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to coordinate the participation of the UN in Expo Milano 2015. The WFP was founded in 1961 and is at the forefront in the fight against hunger with the ability to respond quickly to humanitarian emergencies.
